Your school will have a policy about what you can and cannot do in terms of discipline. Hitting children when they misbehave used to be the norm. Now, however, most school boards and Ministries of Education forbid corporal punishment (though you will be tempted many times!).
Here is an idea that I use:
Teachers often have discretionary marks they can give for attendance, behavior, attitude and participation. If you have, say, 10 marks you can allocate, begin the term by telling students how they will achieve their marks that term and that they already have 10 marks. They can only ‘lose’ those through missed classes, bad attitude, not doing homework or projects and lack of participation.
This works with some students but not all. In my next post, I’ll give you other suggestions.
